A recent research study by Visit Flanders confirms what many event organisers and delegates already experience: Leuven is excelling as a conference destination in Flanders. According to the 2024–2025 conference study, Leuven achieved an impressive satisfaction score of 8.9 out of 10, positioning the city among the region’s top performers for international and academic events.

Sustainability and Delegate Expectations

The study reveals a clear trend: sustainability is now considered essential, not optional. A striking 85% of delegates surveyed reported that ecological efforts play a key role in their decision‑making when selecting a conference destination. Leuven scored highly for its sustainable mobility options and strong public transport connections, reinforcing its reputation as a destination that aligns with modern environmental expectations.

Support for Event Organisers

Beyond its historic charm and compact city centre, Leuven’s success is also attributed to the professional support offered to organisers. The Leuven Convention Bureau – a partnership between the City of Leuven (Visit Leuven) and KU Leuven – plays a pivotal role in guiding organisers through venue selection and event planning. In 2024 alone, the bureau confirmed 37 international conferences, generating more than 27,000 overnight stays in the city.

International Reach and Economic Impact

Leuven attracts a truly global audience, with 73% of conference participants coming from abroad. These visitors significantly boost the local economy, spending on average €1,167 per person during their stay. Moreover, 90% of delegates engage in at least one leisure activity – from dining and shopping to exploring the city’s historic sites – amplifying the wider tourism impact.

A Destination of Knowledge, Innovation and Hospitality

The findings from the Visit Flanders study underscore Leuven’s identity as a high‑quality, sustainable and welcoming hub for international conferences. Its blend of academic excellence, accessible infrastructure and strategic support continues to strengthen Leuven’s reputation as a top choice for organisers seeking memorable, impactful events.
