Hospitality Sales and Marketing Association International (HSMAI) Europe has released a new whitepaper examining how artificial intelligence is reshaping hospitality technology, arguing that the industry is entering a new era of interconnected, autonomous systems.
Titled The Agentic Shift: From Static Systems to Autonomous Hospitality Ecosystems, the publication explores how AI agents could transform the way travellers search for, compare, book and interact with hotels, while outlining the implications for commercial leaders, hotel operators and technology providers.
According to the report, hospitality has traditionally relied on a collection of standalone platforms, from booking engines and customer databases to review sites, central reservation systems and property management software. Although each serves a specific purpose, the result has often been a fragmented guest experience.
Developed by HSMAI Europe's AI Advisory Board, the whitepaper argues that the emergence of increasingly capable AI agents will require a more connected digital infrastructure. Rather than operating in isolation, hospitality systems will need to exchange data seamlessly and support continuous guest engagement across multiple touchpoints.

The report also introduces the concept of hotels becoming "AI-bookable", as generative AI platforms such as ChatGPT, Claude and Gemini begin to play a greater role in travel discovery and booking decisions. In this scenario, hotels will need to ensure their systems are capable of communicating effectively with external AI agents as well as with guests themselves.
Alongside this broader shift, the publication examines topics including AI-powered guest communication, customer data platforms, review-driven experience management, opportunities for direct bookings, operational efficiency, privacy and governance, and practical approaches to implementation.
The Agentic Shift: From Static Systems to Autonomous Hospitality Ecosystems is now available for download from HSMAI Europe.
