Tokyo’s rise to second place in the Global Power City Index confirms the Japanese capital’s growing global influence, highlighting its leadership in livability, sustainability and cultural interaction while reinforcing its appeal as a world-class destination for international business events.
Tokyo has further consolidated its status as one of the world’s leading urban hubs, advancing to second place in the latest edition of the Global Power City Index (GPCI) — a comprehensive annual assessment developed by the Institute for Urban Strategies at The Mori Memorial Foundation.
The GPCI evaluates the “magnetic appeal” of 48 major global cities across six core dimensions: Economy, Research & Development, Cultural Interaction, Livability, Environment, and Accessibility. Together, these indicators gauge a city’s capacity to attract talent, investment, businesses, and visitors on an international scale.
After holding third position for nine consecutive years, Tokyo’s move to second place highlights its ongoing transformation as a center for innovation, culture, and high-quality urban life. Notably, the city secured its first-ever top ranking in Livability, placed second in Cultural Interaction, and made a significant leap in Environment — from 18th to 7th — reflecting a strong and growing commitment to sustainability and well-being.
For the global business events sector, Tokyo’s improved standing in the GPCI further strengthens its profile as a leading destination for international meetings, exhibitions, and corporate events. With world-class infrastructure, highly efficient transport systems, rich cultural offerings, and a clear focus on environmental responsibility, the city offers an exceptional platform for events that seek both reach and relevance.
As Tokyo continues to build on its global competitiveness, Business Events Tokyo remains committed to supporting planners and organisers through tailored services, deep local knowledge, and access to an ever-expanding range of venues and experiences. Tokyo’s upward trajectory in the GPCI is both a reflection of its lasting strengths and an open invitation for the world to engage with all that the city has to offer.
