The Penang Convention & Exhibition Bureau (PCEB) has unveiled the BE Associate programme, a pioneering initiative in Malaysia aimed at building a future-ready talent pipeline for the business events sector.
As the industry grows increasingly complex and globally competitive, BE Associate is positioned as a forward-looking platform that extends beyond traditional academic frameworks. Offered as a complimentary programme for students, it focuses on strengthening long-term industry resilience by equipping participants with practical skills, real-world exposure and direct engagement with industry professionals, ensuring a steady flow of capable talent into the ecosystem.
“BE Associate reflects our commitment to strengthening the industry from within,” said Mr. Ashwin Gunasekeran (below), CEO of PCEB. “Sustainability in this context is about continuity, developing talent, enhancing capability, and ensuring the business events industry in Malaysia remains competitive, adaptive and future-ready. This programme is designed to bridge the gap between education and industry expectations.”

The initiative has also garnered strong backing from state leadership. The Right Honorable Chow Kon Yeow, Chief Minister of Penang, said, “The launch of BE Associate marks a significant step in strengthening Penang’s position as a leading business events destination. By investing in talent development and industry readiness, we are not only supporting the growth of the sector today, but also ensuring its long-term resilience and global competitiveness. This initiative reflects our commitment to building a strong, future-ready workforce that will continue to drive Penang’s economic development.”
Structured to be both dynamic and flexible, BE Associate enables students to engage with the industry in meaningful, hands-on ways. Rather than remaining confined to classroom learning, participants are immersed in live event environments, gaining experience across a range of roles, from operational support to full-scale event execution. This is further enhanced through direct mentorship from industry practitioners, offering real-time guidance and insight.

A key component of the programme is its integrated digital ecosystem, which connects students with industry leaders and creates pathways to internships, employment opportunities and ongoing professional development. By fostering continuous interaction between emerging talent and experienced professionals, BE Associate supports both individual progression and broader industry advancement.
Participants will build competencies across core areas of the business events sector, including event planning, risk management, venue and financial coordination, marketing strategy and the adoption of innovative practices. This comprehensive approach ensures graduates are not only technically proficient but also equipped with the strategic thinking and problem-solving skills required in live event environments.
With the launch of BE Associate, PCEB further strengthens Penang’s reputation as a forward-thinking business events destination, while contributing to the long-term growth and competitiveness of Malaysia’s wider events industry.
