The Penang Convention & Exhibition Bureau (PCEB) has announced its successful annual review for the year 2022 at The George Hotel, Penang.
The event was graced by the Chief Minister of Penang, The Right Honourable Chow Kon Yeow and State Exco for Tourism and Creative Economy, The Honourable Yeoh Soon Hin.
The business events industry has emerged as an essential and robust platform and one of the significant benefits of the business events industry is its potential to drive economic growth. When businesses and organisations gather for events such as trade shows, conferences, and exhibitions, they generate significant economic revenue in the host city or region. This revenue, in turn, creates new job opportunities, which can further fuel economic growth in the area.
“I am proud to share that the State Government, together with PCEB, hosted a total of 281 events for 2022, achieving RM375 million in EEI, compared to the domestic EEI of RM14.1 million in 2021,” announced the Right Honourable Chow Kon Yeow, Chief Minister of Penang during the launching ceremony speech.
“For the year 2022, there were a total of 57,812 business travellers who stayed a total of 181,066 hotel nights,” said Ashwin Gunasekeran, CEO of Penang Convention & Exhibition Bureau (PCEB). He added that this shows a promising recovery that the industry is making, and is looking forward to a greater number in the coming years.
Some of the highlights of PCEB's performance in 2022 include:
“The PETACE team is committed to supporting the growth and development of the business events industry through various initiatives and strategies. We recognise the significant contributions that the industry makes to our economy and society, and we will continue to work closely with industry stakeholders to ensure that it remains a key driver of growth and progress.” quoted The Honourable Yeoh Soon Hin, Penang State Exco for Tourism and Creative Economy.
In addition to promoting economic growth, the business events industry also facilitates knowledge exchange and innovation. Events such as conferences and tradeshows provide a forum for distinguished leaders to share their ideas, insights, and best practices. These events provide a space where attendees can learn about new technologies, processes, and trends in their respective industries. Besides that, this knowledge-sharing can help businesses and organisations to stay competitive, adapt to changing market conditions, and innovate in their operations.
The Chief Minister also added that “The Penang State Government will continue to focus on recovery efforts for sectors affected by the pandemic. This is in line with our determination to achieve the Penang2030 Vision, which is ‘A Family-Focused Green and Smart State that Inspires the Nation.’ Our focus also remains consistent on transforming and developing Seberang Perai as a destination that offers quality life to all its residents, covering economic aspects, human capital, infrastructure, and tourism.”
PCEB has events planned for the coming years, and they are committed to being the centre of excellence to bring high-value and high-impact events into Penang while enhancing the existing event support packages to entice the international market. PCEB is also dedicated to promoting sustainability and social responsibility in event planning and execution and positioning Penang as a premier, sustainable, diversified, and smart business events destination.
