The Net Zero Carbon Events (NZCE) initiative has today confirmed a major step forward in its mission to drive climate action within the global business events sector by officially joining the Global Climate Action Portal (GCAP).
This marks a crucial development in NZCE's efforts to track and report on progress, further integrating the initiative into the international framework aimed at accelerating the global events industry climate solutions.
The GCAP platform, established to track and showcase climate-related initiatives, provides transparency and accountability by presenting the progress of Cooperative Climate Initiatives (CCIs). By joining GCAP, the Net Zero Carbon Events initiative reinforces its commitment to the Paris Climate Agreement and strengthens its alignment with the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC).
James Rees (right), President of the Joint Meetings Industry Council (JMIC), highlights the significance of this move: "The inclusion of Net Zero Carbon Events in the Global Climate Action Portal is a major milestone, as it strengthens our relationship with the UNFCCC and, most importantly, enhances the accountability of NZCE, now recognised as our industry’s prime initiative to address climate change. By reporting our progress through GCAP, we are ensuring greater transparency, and showcasing the collective achievements of our stakeholders."
Alexander Alles, Executive Director of JMIC adds: “This collaboration comes at a pivotal time, as NZCE approaches the completion of its first annual reporting cycle, with a deadline of 31 December 2024. NZCE is calling upon all signatories who joined the initiative by the end of 2023 to fulfill their reporting obligations in accordance with the pledge they signed. These reports will be essential in demonstrating the event industry’s progress toward reducing carbon emissions and achieving net zero targets.”
The partnership between NZCE and GCAP underscores the importance of collective action, rigorous reporting, and shared accountability in the fight against climate change. Together, they are committed to not only setting ambitious targets but also tracking real-world progress and inspiring further action across the industry.
