Maastricht has been chosen as the host city for the next International Association for Business and Society Conference (IABS), taking place from April 2-6, 2025.

IABS is a learned society devoted to research and teaching about the relationships between business, government, and society. The announcement was made by Dr. Abel Diaz Gonzalez from Maastricht University’s School of Business and Economics during the recent IABS conference in Maryland, USA.

Businesses around the world are under increasing demands to improve their social and environmental footprints. The past five years have also demonstrated to businesses that we need to develop new capabilities to navigate uncertainty, rapidly adapt, innovate, and quickly react to changing environments due to health crises, political instability, or social unrest. These challenges urge companies to reconsider their roles and strategies, leading them to seek innovations that balance growth with societal contributions.

The 36th annual conference of the International Association for Business and Society (IABS) is calling on participants to come together under the theme “Redesigning Business for the Common Good”. This invites a critical examination of how companies can fundamentally change their practices to achieve economic prosperity, environmental sustainability and social justice, aligning their operations with social well-being.

The call for this edition of the conference is about the influential role and responsibility that companies have in promoting the common good. This concept captures a state of equilibrium where shared benefits and equitable distribution of resources support present and future generations. To achieve this, companies need to integrate innovative and collaborative strategies. If we look at what is happening in Europe, we find initiatives such as the EU Green Deal, which is designed to harmonise companies within ambitious sustainability goals.

"From a business perspective, if we look ahead, much is needed to meet targets like the ones set up by the EU Green Deal or the SDGS and other initiatives. We have to be honest and think beyond regulations or business compliance: we need to seek and embrace new ways of conducting business, where collaboration goes beyond traditional stakeholders to deeply engage with the community," says Abel Diaz González, who is also the IABS Conference Chair, 2025.

"This involves creating spaces where the needs of diverse groups are heard, and priorities are co-created. Such an approach places greater importance on societal well-being and social justice, emphasising the development of sustainable and equitable solutions. This is what IABS 2025 will be mainly about! As per our tradition, IABS annual meetings are developmental and encourage participants to submit their work on any topics from the broad field of business and society."

The event will be hosted by the Department of Organisation, Strategy and Entrepreneurship (OSE) at the School of Business and Economics, Maastricht University. Delegates can submit their contributions and other proposals through the five different formats that the conference will cover (discussion sessions, paper presentations, symposia, workshops, and innovative sessions).
