Italian Exhibition Group and Symposia have announced that the 14th International Phycological Congress (IPC) will be held at the Palacongressi in Rimini from 10 to 14 September 2029.
Hosting the prestigious quadrennial event for the first time marks a major milestone for Italy, taking over from the 2025 edition held in Panglao, Philippines. The event is sponsored by the International Phycological Society (IPS), a US-based organisation dedicated to advancing the study of algae worldwide.
“The success of this bid makes us truly proud,” said Fabio De Santis, Director of Events & Conferences at IEG. “It marks a first for Italy and highlights a topic of great importance for our country and the region, where algae research has significant environmental and economic implications, and where new entrepreneurial initiatives in cultivation are emerging. Thanks to the scientific team, Symposia, and the strong support of the local network, we were able to prepare a high-quality bid.”
“We are delighted to have helped bring such a prestigious event to Italy,” added Patrizia Pasolini, CEO of Symposia srl. “As a PCO, our aim is to combine the excellence of Italian scientific research with strong logistical and strategic planning. This achievement shows that close collaboration between research and organisational expertise is essential to compete at the highest level internationally and to position Italy as a leading destination for the global scientific community.”
Held every four years, the IPC gathers over 500 experts, researchers and enthusiasts from around the world to discuss the latest developments in algal research and explore all aspects of algal biology.

Professor Fabio Rindi, Congress Convener and former President of the International Phycological Society, underlined the scientific and strategic significance of the event: “In September 2029, Rimini will host one of the world’s most important conferences dedicated to algae biology. We are proud to share this achievement with the local community. This first Italian edition is the result of careful and passionate teamwork. Italy is surrounded by the sea, and algae are drawing growing attention, both as indicators of marine environmental quality and for their many applications, particularly in the food and pharmaceutical sectors. The European Union is actively encouraging algae cultivation as a sustainable activity that can also help improve coastal waters.”
The success of the Italian bid reflects the close cooperation between the Local Organising Committee, Symposia, and the Rimini Riviera Convention Bureau. The LOC includes Professors Stefano Accoroni and Fabio Rindi (Marche Polytechnic University), Giuseppina Alongi (University of Catania), Roberta Congestri and Saverio Savio (Tor Vergata University of Rome), Anna Maria Mannino (University of Palermo), Laura Pezzolesi (University of Bologna), and Diana Sarno (Anton Dohrn Zoological Station).
The collaboration was led by Professor Fabio Rindi of the Department of Life and Environmental Sciences at Marche Polytechnic University. Thanks to the strong partnership among research institutions and the appeal of Rimini as a destination — coordinated by Italian Exhibition Group — Italy submitted a solid and convincing bid, securing the IPS congress for Rimini.
