The Gold Coast Convention and Exhibition Centre (GCCEC) has been recognised for maintaining EarthCheck Platinum Certification in its 11th year of participation in the program.Since GCCEC began the EarthCheck benchmarking process in 2009, the Centre has continued to be leaders of sustainable initiatives within the events industry, ensuring continuous commitment and effort to environmental policies and procedures. EarthCheck is the world’s leading scientific benchmarking, certification and advisory group for travel and tourism.

In 2013, GCCEC was recognised as the first convention centre in the world to achieve Gold certification. The Centre continued its sustainability leadership, being awarded the first convention centre in Australia to receive Platinum status in 2018, alongside Adelaide Convention Centre. GCCEC General Manager, Adrienne Readings says the EarthCheck certification reaffirms the Centre’s commitment to benchmarking and reporting of sustainability initiatives. “This accolade recognises 11 years of GCCEC’s commitment to the environment and sustainable initiatives in the event industry,” Ms Readings said.

“The GCCEC Green Team will continue to explore and implement ways to further improve responsible operational practices as we pursue EarthCheck Master Certification.”

Whilst GCCEC has several programs in place and adheres to its proprietary environmental management plan, the Centre also encourages clients to hold responsible and sustainable events by offering a Green Event Guide, biodegradable packaging, waste segregation and food rescue. GCCEC also recently supported the Joint Meeting Industry Council’s recommendation to demonstrate leadership and dedication to a sustainable future through a submission to the UN Sustainable Development Goals program.
