After a record year in terms of MICE activity, with 81 events hosted in 2024, Girona Congress Centre (el Auditorio Palacio de Congresos de Girona) is positioning itself again as a leading European venue for congress and conventions in 2025.
This year, the venue will host several large international congresses, such as the ICoMST, the TAPPI Nano, the International Symposium on Nuclei in the Cosmos XVIII, and the 2nd Michele Taruffo Girona Evidence Week, and will continue to generate a positive impact on the city.

The marketing and promotion strategies applied in recent years are essential factors that have contributed to the consolidation of the venue as a congress recipient. These large-scale events contribute to positioning Girona as a preferential location on the Catalan, Spanish and international congress circuit, generating a major direct and indirect economic impact on the city.

The year 2025 is expected to be a year of major international and large-scale events, especially from spring onwards. In this sense, several congresses are planned that will place the city on the European circuit of medium-sized cities that host international congresses.

One of these is the ICoMST (International Congress of Meat Science and Technology), organised by IRTA, which will take place from 3 to 8 August. This is the world's most important congress on meat science and technology and will bring together experts from more than 30 countries. According to Girona City Council's Deputy Mayor and First Deputy Mayor for Economic Promotion, Gemma Geis, "we are trying to conolidate our position as an international benchmark for medical and scientific congresses. Our commitment to innovation and networking reinforces the positive impact of these events on the city."

The TAPPI International Conference on Nanotechnology for Renewable Materials (Nano) is also scheduled for 8-11 July, which will bring together experts in nanotechnology in renewable materials from 25 countries. The venue will also host the International Symposium on Nuclei in the Cosmos XVIII, from 15 to 20 June; the 2nd Michele Taruffo Girona Evidence Week, from 2 to 6 June; the TRAFFFIC Digital Business Congress, from 27 to 29 March, and the XXXIV Congress on Communication and Health, from 20 to 22 March, among others.

In addition to these congresses, and as usual, there will also be a large number of company conventions, conferences, graduations, awards ceremonies and other events.

2024, a historic year

2024 has become a historic year, in which the Palacio de Congresos has hosted 81 events, with a total of 30,650 people attending. Seventeen of these events were congresses, with 6,485 attendees. Since its opening in 2006, only in 2008 did it exceed the number of events held, with 84 events.

In terms of the scope of the 2024 congresses, 10 were national and 7 were regional. In relation to the congress sector, a clear position has been consolidated in medical congresses (14 of the 17 have been medical societies). This is a line that continues to be clearly associated with Girona's facilities and which has already been reflected at the beginning of 2025 with the holding of the 34th Congress of the Catalan Society of Digestology.

Congresses with positive value

One of the priority areas of work around major events is the social legacy they leave in the city. In this regard, the Congress Centre team, Girona City Council - through the Girona City Convention Bureau - and the organisers and medical societies are working in coordination to ensure that these congresses leave a positive social impact on the region and its citizens.

These social legacy actions are carried out in accordance with the directives of the World Tourism Organization and the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). During 2024, several congresses in the medical and scientific sector have carried out social legacy actions, thanks to the involvement and networking with Girona medical institutions such as the Josep Trueta University Hospital and the Martí Julià Hospital Park. In total, eight social legacy actions have been generated, including talks and workshops, in which 350 people have participated.

The Girona Congress Centre is a member of the Board of the Association of the Spanish Congress Centres (APCE). The facility works alongside other leading congress centres in Spain, such as IFEMA Madrid, Euskalduna in Bilbao, the Palacio de Congresos in Valencia, Baluarte in Pamplona, Fibes in Seville and the CCIB in Barcelona, among others.
