Austria Center Vienna Invests in Solar Energy to Strengthen Long-Term Venue Resilience
As sustainability becomes a deciding factor in venue selection, Austria Center Vienna is investing in renewable energy to strengthen both its environmental performance and long-term competitiveness. The venue's new photovoltaic system, its largest sustainability investment to date, forms part of a broader infrastructure strategy designed to meet the evolving expectations of international congress organisers.
Austria Center Vienna (ACV) has taken another step in its long-term transformation strategy with the commissioning of a new photovoltaic system designed to generate renewable electricity on site, reducing the venue's dependence on external energy sources while reinforcing its position in an increasingly sustainability-driven international meetings market. The project represents the largest single investment undertaken to date as part of the congress centre's ongoing modernisation programme.
The investment reflects a broader shift in the business events industry, where international congress centres are expected to demonstrate not only technical excellence but also credible, measurable approaches to resource efficiency and future-ready operations. According to Austria Center Vienna, organisers are increasingly evaluating venues on their sustainability credentials alongside their event infrastructure, prompting targeted investments in buildings, technology and energy efficiency.
Susanne Baumann-Söllner, Spokesperson of the Management Board and Board Member for Congress Management at Austria Center Vienna, said: "Sustainability is increasingly shaping competition for international congresses and conventions. Today, organisers expect tangible measures rather than declarations of intent. With this photovoltaic system, we are investing in the long-term competitiveness of Austria Center Vienna while reinforcing Vienna's position as one of the world's leading congress destinations."
The new installation comprises approximately 1,340 photovoltaic modules spread across 2,700 square metres of roof space, providing a total installed capacity of 603 kWp. Once fully operational, the system is expected to generate around 575,000 kilowatt-hours of renewable electricity each year—enough to meet approximately 8.5% of the venue's annual electricity demand.
Rather than exporting electricity to the grid, the energy produced will be consumed directly on site, significantly reducing Austria Center Vienna's reliance on externally sourced power while contributing to greater operational resilience. Project planning and local construction supervision were carried out by ALLPLAN Gesellschaft m.b.H.
Dr Michael Rotter, Board Member for Building and Property Management at Austria Center Vienna, said: "Future-ready venues depend on the seamless integration of building systems, event technology and energy infrastructure. The photovoltaic installation is therefore not a stand-alone measure but an integral part of our long-term infrastructure strategy to enhance efficiency, energy security and resilience."
The photovoltaic project forms part of a wider transformation programme aimed at combining sustainability with technological innovation across the venue's operations. Austria Center Vienna notes that the solar installation is its largest individual sustainability measure to date, but it builds on several initiatives already introduced to improve environmental performance while strengthening the venue's long-term competitiveness.
Among these is the venue's partnership with Wien Energie, launched in 2021, through which waste heat generated by Austria Center Vienna's cooling systems is fed into Vienna's district heating network. As Austria's first Green Conference Centre, the venue says these initiatives collectively contribute to an infrastructure designed to support both environmental objectives and operational efficiency.
According to Austria Center Vienna, the new photovoltaic system will generate enough renewable electricity each year to supply approximately 160 Vienna households. The installation consists of approximately 1,340 solar panels with an installed capacity of 603 kWp, covering around 2,700 square metres of roof area and producing an estimated 575,000 kilowatt-hours annually.
Operated by IAKW-AG, Austria Center Vienna is Austria's largest congress centre, offering 21 halls, 134 meeting rooms and approximately 26,000 square metres of exhibition space. Alongside maintaining the Vienna International Centre, the organisation continues to invest in infrastructure intended to support the evolving requirements of international congresses and conventions.
