The Indian Association of Tour Operators (IATO) inaugural Outbound Convention is being held in Sri Lanka from 2nd to 4th October 2017. This is also the first time the association is having a convention outside India. This is the third major travel convention hosted by Sri Lanka in less than a year having hosted the French Travel Agents Convention in Colombo last November and the PATA annual convention in May this year.

The theme for this year’s IATO Outbound Convention is “Regional Tourism - Beyond Boundaries”. The Convention was inaugurated last evening at the Taj Samudra Hotel in Colombo with the participation of over 160 high profile delegates.
Leading travel and tourism industry personalities from both India and Sri Lanka will participate as panellists at these discussions which will be followed by B2B sessions with the local travel trade.

The Indian Association of Tour Operators (IATO) is the National Apex Body of Tour Operators with a membership of over 1600 across India. IATO’s membership consists of the nation’s inbound tour operators, travel agents, hotel chains, airlines and other stake holders in the tourism & hospitality industries. IATO members are recognized by the Ministry of Tourism of India.
IATO’s Annual Convention is considered the most important event in the Indian travel calendar and attracts between 1200 – 1400 delegates each year. It also attracts strong participation from all the states as well as numerous dignitaries from the political and administrative arms of the central and state governments. The convention is the main gathering of stakeholders in the Indian tourism industry and the grounds for forming strategies and policies for the coming year.

India’s outbound tourism sector is growing at a rapid 20% and is expected to touch 50 million travellers by 2020.
