The Sarawak Convention Bureau (SCB), Malaysia’s first bureau in driving the business events profession, has established a Government and Industry Relations (GIR) division to foster concrete relationships with government and local agencies across the country.

GIR aims to work hand-in-hand to forge a strong coalition between state and federal entities, industry partners, with SCB.

Our broader community have yet to fully understand the value of having business events in Sarawak. This division will pave the way in driving greater working relationships with government bodies, universities, and the public, in servicing this profession,” explained Mr. Chew Chang Guan, General Manager of SCB’s Government and Industry Relations division.

Gaining support from the broader community will give Sarawak greater capacity to bring in more business events. This will cascade into greater opportunities and benefit the state as a whole,“ he continued.

The GIR is a formation of four departments: Research headed by Ms. Elynnie Dominic; Industry Development – Mr. Dylan Redas Noel; Project Liason – Ms. Felicia Foo; and Government Relations by Mr. Chew himself.

Mike Cannon, Managing Director of SCB portrays full confidence in this division: “We have an outstanding team. They are enthusiastic, passionate, talented individuals - the cream of the crop! With the partnership of state government departments, professional and business groups, this alliance will be an unstoppable force in bringing substantial business events to the state.”

Imagine the possibilities that we can achieve together. Through these synergistic partnerships, we are not only transforming the socio-economic development landscape of the state, but also creating a ripple across the country’s education, research, export trade, and foreign exchange.” commented Mr. Cannon.

The GIR division has launched their first initiative through the Sejiwa Senada 2016 programme, a directive by the State’s Planning Unit to raise awareness of the functions held by each government entity.

By partaking in the event, we are looking forward to discuss prospects with the government bodies, while educating industry suppliers and creating awareness for the Bureau and the business of Business Events,” concluded Mr. Chew.
