Melbourne has secured $152.2 million in economic contribution for Victoria through business events won in the first quarter of the 2026–27 financial year. With 75 events confirmed and major international conferences scheduled through 2028, the city is building on its strengths in technology, medical research and financial innovation to sustain its position in the global business events market.

Between July and September 2026, the Melbourne Convention Bureau (MCB) secured 75 business events, representing 28,989 delegates and 63,081 room nights. The results reflect the city’s continued efforts to attract international meetings while strengthening its position in sectors where research, innovation and industry expertise intersect.

Technology and medical research take centre stage

The quarter included the Australian debuts of Data Center World and the AI Summit, which were held concurrently in Melbourne in September. The events brought together 1,850 experts from the data centre, cloud, digital infrastructure and artificial intelligence sectors, highlighting the city’s ambitions to attract business events serving rapidly developing technology industries. Both events are scheduled to return in 2027, with organisers anticipating further growth in delegate numbers.

Medical research also featured prominently in Melbourne’s recent programme. The International Diabetes Federation Western Pacific Region Congress welcomed more than 2,500 delegates to the Melbourne Convention and Exhibition Centre in August for a four-day programme.

Alongside its scientific content, the congress introduced a community day dedicated to people living with diabetes and a Grand Innovation Challenge designed to connect emerging research with new funding opportunities. According to MCB, the initiative was the first of its kind and could inform new approaches to conference design in medical research and other fields.

International conferences secured through 2028

Beyond the events already hosted, MCB’s latest results point to a pipeline spanning several international industries.

In 2027, Melbourne will host the ACI Airport Experience Summit, an annual gathering focused on developments in airport technology, operations and design. The event is expected to attract more than 800 delegates. The city will also welcome the Congress of the Asia Oceania Human Proteome Organisation (AOHUPO), bringing together biomedical experts working in areas including precision medicine, pathogen detection and pharmaceutical development.

The following year, Melbourne will host RoboCup, described in the announcement as the world’s largest robotics competition. The event is expected to draw up to 3,000 delegates and 15,000 spectators. The city’s bid was supported by its network of universities, research institutions and technology start-ups active in advanced manufacturing, automation, digital technologies and applied artificial intelligence.

Fintech will provide another focus in 2028, when Melbourne hosts the inaugural Money20/20 Australia. The conference, which is making its Australian debut, is expected to bring 2,000 delegates from the global financial technology community to the city.

Together, these wins illustrate how Melbourne is seeking to convert its research and industry capabilities into a competitive advantage in international conference bidding. The programme also extends beyond a single sector, combining specialist scientific meetings with large-scale technology and business gatherings.

Incentive travel adds to the pipeline

Alongside its association and corporate conference activity, Melbourne and regional Victoria continue to attract incentive programmes from Asian markets. Upcoming groups include delegations from Ctrip China, PX Mart, Amway Vietnam and TATA AIG India.

The mix of international conferences and incentive travel gives Victoria access to different segments of the business events market, while distributing activity between Melbourne and regional destinations. The first-quarter results provide an indication of the economic contribution already secured, with the future conference pipeline offering further opportunities through 2028.
