Girona to Host 800 Delegates for European MRI Congress

Girona will host more than 800 specialists from across the medical, scientific and technical fields of magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) from 30 September to 3 October, when L’Auditori Palau de Congressos de Girona welcomes the 42nd Annual Meeting of the European Society for Magnetic Resonance in Medicine and Biology (ESMRMB).

Following the society’s meeting in Barcelona in 2024, the move to Girona further reinforces Catalonia’s position as an international hub for research and technology in magnetic resonance. The four-day congress will bring together radiologists, physicists, engineers, radiographers and biologists to examine how the technology is evolving and what its development could mean for clinical practice and society over the next 25 years.

Held under the theme “Shaping the Future”, ESMRMB 2026 will look beyond the current capabilities of MRI to consider the forces reshaping the discipline. Its scientific programme is structured around three areas: the future of MRI technology and equipment, the role of MRI in clinical practice, and its wider place in society.

Two further educational strands will address tools for the development of MRI and emerging clinical perspectives beyond its more established applications.

The congress will also extend its programme beyond the professional audience through a public-facing event on 29 September. El viatge dins del cos humà (A Journey Inside the Human Body) will take place at Centre Cultural La Mercè at 18:00, offering a free introduction to the technology and its applications.
 

The session will explore how MRI can be used to examine the brain, observe the heart in motion, understand bones and joints and detect disease before symptoms appear, while also looking at potential applications in the medicine of the future.

The talk will be delivered by Dr Kai Vilanova, president of the congress organising committee, radiologist and Director of Innovation at the MRI Unit of Clínica Girona. Vilanova is also a consultant in radiology at IDI Hospital Dr J. Trueta/Hospital Santa Caterina and a professor at the Faculty of Medicine of the University of Girona.

The public session has been organised jointly by ESMRMB, L’Auditori Palau de Congressos de Girona and the Girona City Convention Bureau. It forms part of the social legacy programme associated with congresses held at the Girona venue, using the presence of an international scientific meeting to create an opportunity for knowledge-sharing with the wider community.

Attendance is free, although registration is required. The ESMRMB congress itself runs from 30 September to 3 October, bringing more than 800 participants to Girona for four days of scientific exchange focused on the next stage of MRI technology, medicine and research.
