Edinburgh will host the G20 Finance Ministers and Central Bank Governors Meeting on 8–9 July 2027, bringing some of the world’s most influential economic decision-makers to the Scottish capital for discussions on the global financial agenda.

The meeting will take place at the Edinburgh International Conference Centre (EICC), reinforcing the city’s position as an international destination for high-profile governmental, diplomatic and business events.

The gathering will bring together finance ministers and central bank governors from G20 member economies, alongside senior representatives of major international financial institutions. As one of the most significant meetings on the international economic calendar, the event will place Edinburgh at the centre of discussions involving senior representatives responsible for shaping international economic and financial policy.

The selection of Edinburgh and the EICC reflects the requirements of hosting a gathering of this scale, where security, operational planning and diplomatic coordination are central to the event’s delivery. It also builds on the Scottish capital’s established reputation as a financial centre and the conference venue’s experience in accommodating complex international meetings.

EICC builds on experience hosting international political gatherings

The EICC has previously hosted several major governmental and diplomatic events, including the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting (CHOGM), the North Atlantic Assembly and the NATO Parliamentary Assembly’s 55th Annual Session. The G20 meeting will add to this track record, further demonstrating the venue’s capacity to accommodate international gatherings involving senior political and economic representatives.

Preparations are already underway, with the EICC working alongside international, national and local partners to coordinate the facilities, technology, delegate services and security arrangements required for the July 2027 meeting.

EICC board chair Cllr Lezley Marion Cameron highlighted the significance of the appointment for both the venue and the city, emphasising the responsibility associated with hosting international decision-makers.

“I am delighted the Edinburgh International Conference Centre is again hosting world leaders and economic decision makers. To do so is a privilege and a responsibility. It also boosts Edinburgh’s offering as a business events city and shows confidence in the EICC’s facilities and track record of delivering international political and financial gatherings to world class standards.

“Our excellent EICC team, led by CEO Amanda Wrathall, will work closely with partners to ensure all aspects of this G20 Finance Ministers and Central Bank Governors business meeting is executed with the necessary care, precision and expertise for which the EICC is warmly and widely respected and renowned.”

The EICC team, led by chief executive Amanda Wrathall, will work with partners to deliver the operational requirements of the meeting, which will demand close coordination across venue operations, delegate management and security.

Edinburgh’s financial services sector in the spotlight

The announcement also places a spotlight on Edinburgh’s position in the international financial services industry. The city’s history in the sector spans more than three centuries, and it is the UK’s second-largest financial centre outside London, according to Edinburgh City Council leader Jane Meagher.

Meagher welcomed the decision to select Edinburgh, highlighting the opportunity to showcase the city’s financial expertise and wider offer to an international audience.

“We’re pleased to have been chosen to host the G20 Finance Ministers and Central Bank Governors meeting in Edinburgh next Summer and look forward to welcoming the world’s most prominent financial decision makers to our capital city.

“Edinburgh has long earned its global status as a major centre for financial services, with our history in the sector spanning over three centuries. We’re proud to be the UK’s second largest financial centre outside of London and of our longstanding reputation, expertise and innovation in the finance sector.

“With a strong track record of delivering events on the world’s stage, we look forward to having all eyes on us next year – and working with partners at both a Government and local level to showcase the very best of what Edinburgh has to offer.”

Scottish Secretary Douglas Alexander also described the meeting as an opportunity to highlight Scotland’s economic credentials, linking the announcement to the UK’s presidency of the G20 and Edinburgh’s international standing as a financial centre.

“The UK's presidency of the G20 is a huge opportunity for the whole of the country. Bringing the world's finance ministers to Edinburgh recognises our capital's reputation as a global financial centre. This is a significant moment for Edinburgh and the whole of Scotland - the event showcases Scottish innovation and ambition to a global audience.”

Potential legacy for Edinburgh’s business events sector

Beyond the immediate activity generated by visiting delegations, the meeting is expected to provide an opportunity to raise Edinburgh’s international profile, support future inward investment and strengthen its position in the market for governmental, association and corporate events.

Hosting a high-profile international meeting can also demonstrate a destination’s ability to meet demanding operational requirements, from security and diplomatic coordination to technical infrastructure and delegate services. For Edinburgh, the G20 gathering offers a platform to showcase the capabilities of the EICC and the wider network of local partners involved in delivering major international events.

The longer-term benefits will depend on how the city builds on the visibility generated by the meeting and converts it into future opportunities for investment and event acquisition. With preparations already underway, the focus will be on ensuring that the EICC and its partners deliver the meeting to the standards required by participating governments and international institutions.

The G20 Finance Ministers and Central Bank Governors Meeting will take place in Edinburgh on 8–9 July 2027, marking another significant addition to the city’s portfolio of international political and financial gatherings.
