Effective collaboration between PCOs and convention bureaux allows for aligned, city-wide approaches that result in stronger outcomes for clients, local communities, and international delegates.

As a Destination Partner, Vienna will work closely with IAPCO’s global community and contribute to several key initiatives. This includes joining the judging panel for the IAPCO Partner’s Emerging Leader Award, which recognises emerging industry talent. Vienna will also host an upcoming IAPCO Advisory Board Meeting – an opportunity to deepen engagement with local leaders and showcase the city’s world-class capabilities.

Vienna joins a cohort of internationally recognised destinations that collaborate with IAPCO to champion best practice, support knowledge exchange and elevate professional standards in conference organisation. The partnership also provides strategic access to IAPCO’s accredited PCOs, who deliver more than 21,000 meetings and conferences annually, and in 2024, generated an estimated €17.87 billion in economic impact.

Reflecting on the partnership, Sissi Lignou, President of IAPCO, said: “We warmly welcome Vienna to the IAPCO Destination Partner community. Their professionalism, creativity and commitment to innovation make them a natural fit, and we look forward to the value this partnership will bring to our members and the wider industry.

“Our Destination Partners help ensure PCOs have direct access to senior decision-makers within leading cities. This partnership strengthens the connection between Vienna and our global membership, supporting our shared ambition to deliver exceptional meetings and events worldwide. We also know from other destinations, that when a convention bureau includes an IAPCO accredited PCO at the very early stages of bidding, the chance of winning that bid increases.”

Anita Paic, Director B2B Management and Vienna Convention Bureau at the Vienna Tourist Board, emphasised Vienna’s proven strengths as a meeting destination for organisers and their clients.

“Vienna is proud of its close ties with professional conference organisers worldwide. Working with IAPCO further underlines the city’s strong standing as a high-quality meeting destination. We look forward to sharing our s tory with the global leaders in professional conference organisation and to using this partnership as an important platform to highlight Vienna’s unique capabilities, amenities, culture and ambitions. Building on this year’s IAPCO Council Meeting as an initial milestone, we are excited to deepen and expand this cooperation. We look forward to creating tangible value for organisers and their clients and to shared success with IAPCO.”

Established in 2013, the IAPCO Destination Partnership Programme now includes 11 convention bureaux worldwide. Each partner contributes unique strengths that support IAPCO’s mission and the long-term advancement of the global meetings and business events industry.

Vienna's meeting industry is represented by the Meeting Destination Vienna. Founded in 1969, it is supported by the City of Vienna and the Vienna Chamber of Commerce. In 2024, Meeting Destination Vienna set records across the board with 6,619 congresses and corporate events and around 671,000 participants. Every ninth overnight stay in the city in 2024 was attributable to meetings, highlighting the central importance of congresses and corporate events for Vienna. They strengthen the business location and contribute to the added value locally.

Vienna as a meeting destination is therefore included in both the Visitor Economy Strategy of the Vienna Tourist Board, as well as in the strategy "Vienna 2030 - Economy & Innovation" of the Federal Capital Vienna. According to the latest available rankings from the International Congress and Convention Association (ICCA, #1) and the Union of International Associations (UIA, #2), Vienna is one of the world’s leading meeting destinations. The exceptional meeting infrastructure, the high service quality of the meeting service sector as well as the cultural attractiveness of the city are all factors that contribute to Vienna’s top position.

Powered by Meeting Media Company, publisher of Headquarters Magazine (HQ) – a leading international publication based in Brussels, serving the global MICE industry and association community.

Together, IFES and AKEI will work to promote best practice, raise professional standards, and create meaningful connections between exhibition professionals in Korea and the global IFES network.

“Korea’s exhibition landscape is evolving at pace,” said Jörg Zeißig, President of IFES. “This partnership with AKEI reflects our belief that for our industry to thrive globally, we need to champion regional growth, exchange knowledge freely and open new pathways for collaboration. We see this as an exciting opportunity to connect Korean enterprises with our international members, unlocking new markets, partnerships and more resilient ways of working.”

From the Korean side, Sohn Soo-Deuk, President of AKEI, shared: “AKEI is excited to join forces with IFES to promote cooperation and shared success among exhibition practitioners. Korea’s exhibition industry plays a vital role in driving exports, supporting related sectors and generating employment. Through this partnership, we aim to strengthen the industry’s infrastructure, create new business opportunities for SMEs and enhance Korea’s standing in the global exhibition community.”

Korea’s exhibition sector continues to gain global attention. AKEI has been instrumental in achieving formal industry recognition through the Exhibition Industry Development Act, launching certification programmes and advancing digital transformation and international expansion. These initiatives have established a strong platform for deeper engagement with IFES’s worldwide membership. In turn, IFES brings a diverse network of over 320 companies in 47 countries — a powerful hub for knowledge-sharing, education and business development across the exhibition supply chain.

Under the MOU, IFES and AKEI will collaborate on professional development, share market intelligence and best practices, and help Korean service providers and organisers reach new international opportunities. Likewise, IFES members will benefit from AKEI’s market insight and local expertise, opening doors to partnerships within Korea’s dynamic and innovative exhibition scene. This collaboration supports AKEI’s ambition to boost the industry’s global competitiveness while expanding IFES’s presence across East Asia.

Sustainability, innovation and professional excellence are shared priorities for both organisations. Korea’s growing strengths in smart technology, immersive environments and digital engagement align naturally with IFES’s focus on emerging formats, circular economy principles and global service standards. Together, IFES and AKEI will explore how hybrid models, sustainable supply chains and joint educational initiatives can further raise the bar for the exhibitions industry.

This agreement marks a positive step toward a more connected, forward-looking exhibition community in Korea and across the globe. IFES and AKEI extend heartfelt thanks to all members, partners and stakeholders who helped bring this collaboration to life — and look forward to the opportunities it will create for our shared industry.

Powered by Meeting Media Company, publisher of Headquarters Magazine (HQ) – a leading international publication based in Brussels, serving the global MICE industry and association community.

Through this partnership, IAPCO and Business Events Australia are empowering our members to lead by example, demonstrating how creativity, collaboration, and responsibility can coexist to deliver exceptional and impactful events worldwide.”

Robin Mack, Acting Managing Director at Tourism Australia, said: "Sustainability is increasingly important for the business events industry and one of Tourism Australia’s key strategic pillars, driving how we market, operate, and partner across the industry.

“Our new partnership with IAPCO will strengthen and help to accelerate sustainable practices. We look forward to announcing the first Sustainability Award winner and launching the Toolkit at IAPCO’s Annual Meeting & General Assembly in February next year."

The IAPCO Sustainability Award powered by Business Events Australia will honour outstanding achievements by IAPCO member companies demonstrating leadership and innovation in sustainable event management.

As part of the collaboration, Business Events Australia will also support the IAPCO Sustainability Toolkit, a new digital resource providing actionable strategies, checklists, and tools that PCOs can implement into their operations. Scheduled for release in March 2026, the toolkit will reflect the latest global best practices and standards in sustainable event delivery.

Ajay Bhojwani, IAPCO Sustainability Committee Chair and Regional Managing Director, Middle East & Africa at MCI Group, said the partnership represents a united commitment to driving change.

“This partnership represents a shared commitment to meaningful action. Together, we aim to showcase innovation, create practical tools that enable every organiser to make a real difference, as well as recognise the best-in-class implementation of sustainability actions and tools.

“Recent IAPCO member research found that 71% of members have a clear sustainability vision and strategy, and 58% have a designated sustainability role within their organisations responsible for implementing sustainability practices in their clients’ event.

“However, respondents identified the increased cost of implementation and a lack of sustainability subvention and subsidy programmes as key challenges in advancing sustainability across the events industry. Which is why this partnership is so important,” said Bhojwani.

The partnership will also include a comprehensive programme of branding, education, and engagement opportunities.

Through this collaboration, IAPCO reaffirms its endorsement as a signatory of the Net Zero Carbon Events (NZCE) initiative. Both organisations share their commitment to advancing sustainability, celebrating excellence, and ensuring the meetings industry continues to play a leading role in achieving the UN Sustainable Development Goals.

Powered by Meeting Media Company, publisher of Headquarters Magazine (HQ) – a leading international publication based in Brussels, serving the global MICE industry and association community.

The breakfast in Las Vegas was the latest example of their ongoing co-operation.

The morning event at IMEX was particularly timely as it coincides with the conclusion of a productive two cycle collaboration with ISI:

Ottawa hosted the 64th ISI World Statistics Congress in 2023 at Rogers Centre Ottawa

The Hague is hosting the 65th edition this week, 5 to 9 October 2025, at World Forum The Hague.

Of particular note is the fact that the 63rd ISI World Statistics Congress was originally due to take place in The Hague in 2021, before being postponed to 2025 due to the pandemic. The destinations were already collaborating as partners for ISI, but they adapted their approach and support for each other and the client to respond to the significant change in plans.

A spokesperson from The International Statistical Institute underlined the advantage of the combined approach across the two congresses. “Ottawa and The Hague worked with us as one team. We had early visibility on constraints, streamlined support for visas and accommodation, and consistent attention to legacy and opportunities for young statisticians. The continuity between the two destinations helped us deliver a stronger congress for our community.”

Working as one team across both destinations, the partner cities aligned their bids to deliver world leading congresses, venue plans and city services, accommodation and additional meeting space, whilst keeping legacy at the centre of both events, including a significant programme of short courses and education for statisticians from all fields of statistics.

Stephanie Seguin, Vice President, Sales, Business and Major Events at Ottawa Tourism, said the approach is designed around client outcomes. “When destinations share sector intelligence and plan together, organisers see the benefit in real time. Ottawa delivered a strong platform for ISI in 2023, and our joint work with The Hague has supported a smooth handover into 2025 so the scientific programme and the delegate experience could grow from one edition to the next.”

Building on that continuity, Bas Schot, Head of The Hague and Partners Convention Bureau, noted how the partnership shows up on the event floor and in the city. “This collaboration is practical; it accelerates problem solving and it focuses everyone on legacy. As World Forum welcomes ISI this week, we are proud to champion women in statistics, young statisticians and innovation in statistics and data science, priorities that run through the programme and into the city.”

Published by Meeting Media Company, the publisher of Headquarters Magazine (HQ) – a leading international publication based in Brussels, serving the global MICE industry and association community.

This partnership reflects ICCA’s forward-looking approach: shaping the future of the industry while driving progress in the destination marketing sector and knowledge development for ICCA members and partners worldwide.

The two organisations are jointly launching the first-ever survey focussed on understanding the future of learning and the academic landscape in the European business events industry. This initiative will provide a data-driven overview of current educational offerings, identify critical skill gaps, and look at evolving industry needs as part of ICCA's strategy to support lifelong learning and to offer valuable educational programmes to our community.

Dr. Senthil Gopinath, CEO of ICCA, said: "ICCA's partnership with SANCBE is very long-term and this is yet another important step forward in our efforts to better serve destination marketing members. The survey results will also help shape the continuing development of ICCAUni, which aims to connect the academic and business events spheres.

Matthias Schultze and Eric Bakermans, Co-Chairs of SANCBE, said: “One of SANCBE’s strengths lies in its ability to collect data across 29 European countries and agree on a shared analysis and strategic approach. This makes collaboration with ICCA not only logical but essential, as we combine forces to gain a clearer understanding of the education landscape in Europe and foster meaningful dialogue with academic institutions to drive its development.”

The initiative will provide convention bureaus and DMOs throughout the European region with actionable information they can use to bolster educational offerings and partnerships with relevant academic stakeholders.

Powered by Meeting Media Company, publisher of Headquarters Magazine (HQ) – a leading international publication based in Brussels, serving the global MICE industry and association community.
