The Calabar International Convention Centre, in collaboration with the Nigerian Association of Agricultural Economists, NAAE, has won the bid to host the 6th International Conference of the African Association of Agricultural Economists, AAAE in September 2019.

The decision was made after the EXCO meeting held on the sidelines of the just concluded International Conference of the African Association of Agricultural Economists AAAE, 2016 held in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. This decision followed a joint bid presentation by Calabar ICC on behalf of Nigeria, on the sidelines of the international conference in Milan, Italy last August.

The National President, NAAE, Prof. Bola, whose association played a leading role in this bid commented that NAAE has a strong membership base with members holding strategic positions in the public and private sectors, including former Ministers and Commissioners of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, Managing Directors of financial institutions, former and present Vice-Chancellors, eminent Professors, Directors, Scholars and other distinguished Africans in their own rights. He added that ‘the possible trickledown effect of the hosting of this Conference is unmeasurable…Nigeria has the capability to technically, commercially and politically uplift the AAAE and its objectives to the admiration of people of other Continents that will be planning to attend.

According to Calabar ICC Director, Sales and Marketing, Mr. Ben Asoro, the conference is expected to attract over 800 delegates from around the world into the State and is also expected to have positive impact on the Federal and State economy in addition to 3,200 bed nights, 1,500 extra airline seats into Margaret Ekpo International airport and induced spending in local eatery, pre- and post-conference multiplier effect for delegates planning on coming early or extending their stay besides the legacy that comes with hosting such a forum.

On the intellectual capacity development that comes with hosting such an event, Prof. Ayoola, The West Africa Coordinator of AAAE explained that AAAE is the elite body of professionals whose intellectual property provides the backbone to agricultural development of individual countries in Africa and the continent as a whole. Therefore the decision to hold its next Conference in Nigeria is a clear recognition of the lead role that Nigeria's agricultural economy plays on the continent coupled with the need to backstop Nigeria technically and intellectually with the intellectual resources required to play that role better in future. In this regard, the young and old professionals in West Africa have an opportunity to deploy their intellectual resources in that direction and harness the same from professionals from Africa and other parts of the world during this conference.

He urged the public policy authorities in Nigeria and the region, to seize the opportunity to maximise the benefits of the Association's Conference to accelerate the pace of agricultural development and attainment of food and nutrition security.

As Nigeria’s first purpose-built convention facility, the Calabar International Convention Centre is looking forward to pulling out all the stops to ensure the International Conference of the African Association of Agricultural Economists, AAAE in 2019 will be the best one ever.
