Quito announces the building of a new Metropolitan Convention Centre

The launch of the new Metropolitan Convention Centre in Quito has been officially announced. This is a strategic project for the Ecuadorean capital, which will give further impetus to the emerging “Parque Bicentenario” district, along with the Metro Station and the Amazonas Avenue Boulevard.

The new Quito Convention Centre will be built with the support of the companies AECON and ADC, shareholders in the Mariscal Sucre International Airport Project that was conceded to Quiport Corporation S.A., who have expressed their interest in selling their shares. These companies have shown their intention of making a contribution and leaving a legacy to the city, in accordance with their policies of corporate social responsibility, as a result of which they finance projects of economic, social and cultural relevance.

For this, they have resolved to donate to the city a project worth US$15m, for the design, financing and construction of the Quito Convention Centre. This will be built in within an allocated area of 11.4 hectares, located in the former Quito Airport.

This infrastructure will combine a number of spaces for conventions and conferences, with a total capacity of 6,250 people. The total approximate area of the Convention Centre is 24.000 m², and the building will characterized by its dynamic, flexible and convertible style, with a number of different areas variously dedicated to fairs, congresses, parking and support areas.

This new infrastructure will help the meeting industry in Quito. This industry has been one of the fastest growing segments of the tourism sector over the past decade, representing approximately 20% of international arrivals globally. According to statistic data from the International Association of Congresses and Conventions (ICCA), more than 7,500 events take place annually across the world, including fairs, exhibitions, congresses and conventions.
