Medical education association chooses NewcastleGateshead for 2018 event

The Association for the Study of Medical Education (ASME) has confirmed that NewcastleGateshead will be the host destination for their 2018 Annual Scientific Meeting. The theme of the event is medical education with a global perspective, with esteemed keynote speakers flying in from around the globe to speak on the subject.

NewcastleGateshead has a track-record of hosting high-profile medical conferences as well as having one of the country’s leading medical universities at Newcastle University, which is an ASME institutional member.

Taking place at the iconic Sage Gateshead on the NewcastleGateshead Quayside from 11-13 July 2018, the meeting will attract more than 600 national and international medical professional delegates, contributing over £650,000 to the local economy. 

Paul Szomoru, Head of Business Events at NewcastleGateshead Convention Bureau, said: “It’s a privilege to be hosting the ASME annual scientific meeting in 2018. For over sixty years ASME has championed research into medical education and the development of medical educators. To be welcoming these delegates and speakers to our city where we’ve a proud history in medical education and life sciences, which is just as relevant today thanks to the brilliant work of our hospitals and universities, is a great opportunity for us to showcase these strengths. 

“This conference also couldn’t be happening at a more exciting time as it will take place during the Great Exhibition of the North, England’s biggest event for 2018 which is running throughout the summer so attending delegates are sure to have a fantastic experience when here.”

The event will allow delegates to attend keynote plenary speeches from influential speakers including Professors Phil Cotton, David Sklar, Deborah Helitzer and Susan van Schalkwyk, as well as networking, attending workshops, presenting their oral and poster abstracts to the medical education and research community, and attending social events.

In 2017 ASME celebrated its 60th anniversary in driving the advancement of best practise in medical education for people with a commitment and interest in medical education and training. ASME’s mission is to meet the needs of teachers, trainers and learners in medical education, and it achieves this through providing its members with CPD, education and training, leadership development, research knowledge and skills and networks to share and further best practice in medical education.
