Panel Discussion at the The 5th Shanghai-Stuttgart Symposium on Automotive and Powertrain Technology

"The 5th Shanghai-Stuttgart Symposium on Automotive and Powertrain Technology" was held at Tongji University of Shanghai at the end of October 2021 in cooperation with the Institute of Automotive Engineering (IFS) of Stuttgart University.

Organised by the Research Institute of Automotive Engineering and Vehicle Engines Stuttgart (FKFS), Shanghai AI NEV Innovative Platform Co. Ltd (ANIP) and Nanjing Stuttgart Joint Exhibition Ltd., a subsidiary of Messe Stuttgart, the event was the result of the cooperation initiative of the Sino-German Centre for Science Promotion (CDZ), a research funding agency of the German Research Association (DFG) and the National Natural Science Foundation of China (NSFC), whose head office is located in Beijing. The objective is to promote scientific cooperation between Germany and China in the special areas of natural sciences, life sciences, management sciences and engineering sciences. Michael Kleiner, Ministerial Director in the Baden-Württemberg Ministry of Economics, Employment and Tourism, welcomed the participants at the opening of the Symposium in his role as a representative of Baden-Württemberg.

Following its cancellation due to the pandemic in 2020, the first-class international Symposium attracted worldwide attention this year on account of its conference programme which highlighted the future of automobile production. The event was divided into four sessions on "Vehicle Design", "Smart and Autonomous Vehicles“, "Fuel Cells and Batteries", and "Powertrain and Electrical Propulsion". The Symposium was staged for the first time in a hybrid format. Participants could follow the Symposium online from anywhere in the world in order to listen to talks and then jointly discuss the content in Q&A sessions or take part in a panel discussion. Vehicle manufacturers, automotive component suppliers, electrical equipment and battery manufacturers, and suppliers of fuel cell technology were invited in order to discuss new strategies in the new energy vehicle industry. A large number of global companies from Baden-Württemberg were present, for example Bosch, Carl Zeiss, Daimler, Liebherr, Mahle, Porsche, Valeo and ZF.

A total of 72 speakers, including internationally renowned keynote and technology speakers, contributed their reflections on the future of the automotive industry. They encountered 1,519 listeners, of whom 464 were present at the Symposium and 1,055 connected online. "Through this Symposium, which we jointly staged with Nanjing Stuttgart Joint Exhibition Ltd., we reaffirmed the competence of Messe Stuttgart in the area of automotive events. We want to consolidate and further extend this highly innovative topic area, and also continue it at our head office in Stuttgart," concluded Roland Bleinroth, President of Messe Stuttgart.

The School of Automotive Studies at Tongji University has long had close links with Stuttgart University in Germany resulting in a number of vehicle forums. The "6th Shanghai-Stuttgart Symposium" will be held again as scheduled in 2022 and is already in the planning stage. The date of the Symposium has not yet been fixed, but it will be in autumn again.
