The Kuala Lumpur Convention Centre’s Deputy General Manager, John Burke and exhibitions team joined venues around the world in marking the Global Exhibitions Day 2017 (#GED17) on 7 June. To celebrate the occasion, the Centre’s award-winning Senior Chef de Partie, Mustaffa Kamal bin Othman, crafted a handmade ice-carving.

According to Burke, “We are honoured to participate in the Global Association for the Exhibition Industry’s (UFI) #GED17 to celebrate the power of the exhibition industry and the positive impact it has on jobs, business, innovation and local investment, as well as the diverse career opportunities it creates.

Elaborating on the Centre’s exhibition segment performance in 2016, Burke, shared, “Last year we hosted 61 exhibitions with an attendance of over 1.2 million visitors. Of this, 74% or 45 exhibitions were recurrent clients. Long-standing exhibitions like BookFest, ARCHIDEX, OGA, FHM, Asia Water and Comic Fiesta continue to be the backbone of our yearly business calendar. All of these have made consecutive appearances and/or hosted every edition with us since opening in June 2005 and have all events at the facility in 2017.”

Moving forward, the Centre’s expansion continues to progress and is due to be completed in mid-2019. The extension will provide an additional 10,000 sqm of flexible and multi-purpose space, which means more room to comfortably accommodate larger exhibitions and international association meetings, as well as concurrent events, allowing new and current clients to grow their activities and/or events significantly.

Now in its second year, #GED17 puts a focus on the people and jobs in the exhibition industry, under the title “Think Global – Act Local”. Activities have been scheduled in 45 countries and regions around the world. 40 Global Exhibitions Day partner associations are united behind this joint awareness-raising campaign.
