Brisbane Unveils Blockbuster 2020 Events Calendar

From circus to cycling and footy to food, Brisbane is serving up another blockbuster year of sport, festivals, exhibitions and stage productions in 2020. The Brisbane 2020 Events Calendar was unveiled by the city’s economic development board, Brisbane Marketing, today.

General Manager of Business & Major Events Juliet Alabaster said Brisbane and its surrounds would host some of the biggest sporting and cultural fixtures in the Asia Pacific region. “From January 2020, Brisbane will once again welcome some of the world’s top tennis talent for the inaugural ATP Cup and Brisbane International tennis tournaments,” Ms Alabaster said.

“The sporting spectaculars continue all year long with the Australian Youth Water Polo Championships, the ICC Men’s and Women’s T20 World Cup, the Brisbane Cycling Festival, the NRL Magic Round, the Bledisloe Cup and more. “Arts and culture lovers won’t be disappointed with extraordinary exhibitions and performances including a world-first fully digital production of Wagner’s internationally renowned operatic masterpiece, The Ring Cycle, at the Queensland Performing Arts Centre (QPAC).

“The Queensland Art Gallery and Gallery of Modern Art (QAGOMA) will soon open its thought-provoking Water exhibition, showing until April 2020, while the annual three-week Brisbane Festival will deliver another enchanting program of theatre, music, circus and dance.” Ms Alabaster said 2020 would also see the return of Curiocity Brisbane, an annual celebration of the city’s strengths in science, innovation, technology and the arts.

“Curiocity Brisbane will include the two-day QODE innovation conference and the five-day World Science Festival Brisbane featuring a program of events, conversations and cinema on the theme of Extremes and Adaptations. “Foodies will be catered for when Brisbane celebrates the fresh produce and flavours of its surrounding regions with festivals including Regional Flavours, Scenic Rim Eat Local Week and Moreton Bay Food and Wine Festival.”

Ms Alabaster said Brisbane’s ever-increasing calendar of events was helping to attract record numbers of national and international visitors, and generate over $150 million for the economy every year. “Brisbane’s blockbuster events calendar, combined with a range of new hotels, restaurants and experiences is seeing record numbers of visitors flock to our city,” she said.

“These events also contribute to Brisbane’s appeal as a conference and incentives destination. By aligning with a major event, conference organisers can access thought leaders and top talent, and build VIP experiences into delegate packages.”
