The Adelaide Convention Bureau has further enhanced the city’s position as one of the world’s the best Health Sciences and Medical conferencing destinations with its 4th annual Biomed Showcase. This year’s event coincided with the opening of the newest building within Adelaide’s Biomed city, the University of South Australia’s Cancer Research Institute. It sits adjacent the Adelaide University’s Health and Medical Sciences building, the South Australian Health and Medical Research Institute (SAHMRI) and the new world-class Royal Adelaide Hospital. Adelaide’s Biomed city is the largest Health Sciences and Medical precinct in the southern hemisphere.

As the showcase guests experienced first-hand, the Biomed City is conveniently located directly adjacent the newly upgraded Adelaide Convention Centre at the western end of the Adelaide Riverbank, a vibrant meetings, entertainment, sport and leisure precinct running parallel to North Terrace which in turn houses hotels providing 3500 beds. The entire region is Australia’s and one of the world’s most easily accessible and connected meetings locations - it is also an easy 20 minutes from Adelaide airport. See map on link.

In a demonstration of the Team Adelaide approach to doing business, guests were afforded a first-hand look at the impressive Biomed offering including presentations by the Dean’s and CEO’s of the respective institutions. During their tour of the state-of-the-art new wings of the Adelaide Convention Centre, it was revealed, in a demonstration of further local collaboration, that the centre is about to launch a new series of healthy menus prepared in consultation with the nutrition research team based (across the road) at the SAHMRI.

Of course no visit to Adelaide is complete without a local food and wine encounter and this was no exception. In a demonstration of the breadth of experiences being able to be achieved easily in one day, guests started their day at a local chocolatier, Bracegirdles just 10 minutes from the city. A 20 minute trip to the glorious Adelaide Hills for morning tea at The Haus in the township of Hahndorf was followed lunch with magnificent views from the veranda of The Lane winery. The day concluded with a tour and tasting at the iconic Penfolds winery before guests headed back to the airport.

Damien Kitto, CEO, Adelaide Convention Bureau, said: "The Bureau’s focus on Health Sciences events since the announcement of the construction of the Biomed city has paid dividends with over 40% of all events won by Adelaide fitting this genre. Our strong relationships with the individual heads of the Universities, the hospital and various pillars of research within SAHMI as well as the relevant Government Departments and our Team Adelaide approach to securing these events will continue to return the results."
