Inspired by ‘participating through language’, the International Conference of German Teachers (IDT) is coming to Vienna in 2021.

Every four years teachers and researchers get together in a different German-speaking country for the IDT – the world’s largest conference for teachers of German as a foreign or second language. The next event will take place at the University of Vienna from August 2-7, 2021. Around 3,000 participants from more than 100 countries are expected to attend.

The Austrian Association of German as a Foreign Language/Second Language (ÖdaF) is hosting the worldwide conference of the International German Teacher’s Association (IDV), an organization with 250,000 members in 85 countries worldwide. The event is staged in partnership with local member associations, most recently in Bolzano, Italy in 2013 and Freiburg (Fribourg), Switzerland in 2017. Vienna last hosted the IDT in 1989.

International networking and related program for the general public

The event features a packed schedule of lectures, podium discussions, talks, more than 50 special interest topics and an exhibition by international publishers and language and cultural institutions in German-speaking countries, with a particular focus on the host region. In addition to networking and comparing notes with their international peers, participants can also attend readings, concerts, performances and film screenings, some of which are open to the general public.

“Held every four years, the IDT provides a focal point for education experts. Contacts are established and maintained, prospective partnerships are born and fresh impetus is created for academic developments. The IDT also brings researchers and front-line teachers into direct contact with one another. The upcoming event gives colleagues from all over the world a golden opportunity to compare notes at a deeper level – and to explore and enjoy Vienna for a week,” explained ÖDaF President Hannes Schweiger. “As leading German-speaking university town with more than 180,000 students, Vienna is the ideal location for IDT 2021,” added Christian Mutschlechner, Director of the Vienna Convention Bureau, welcoming the event ahead of its return to the city.
